I made so many prediction, and got it correct in the end, but even then I still had to wait until the end to confirm it and get a satisfying explanation. Keep going. Learn and invest in yourself – whether that’s time to write, reading about the craft, taking a course, going on a retreat…you are the only person who can write your book. I really think the phrase ‘write what you love’ is important too – after eight years of trying, it’s what finally worked for me! Last One to Die was a fun and easy read. I really liked the combination of Supernatural/Murder-Mystery, with a hint of romance.

Amidst this terror, Niamh takes up her placement in a Victorian museum, where she plays the role of a factory owner’s daughter who died a gruesome and untimely death. No wonder, then, that Niamh is glad to befriend Jess, a self-proclaimed “history nerd” who’s thrilled to visit the museum’s parlour that was once used by “the infamous Madame Josephine...Fortune teller, hypnotist, and mistress of the occult.” Then there’s creepy Will who works there, and gorgeous Tommy who sets Niamh’s heart a-pounding.She has a long-standing love affair with all things scary, reading Point Horrors at primary school before graduating to Stephen King in her misguided teens. Classic 90s and 00s horror movies are definitely her pub quiz strong point and her first love may well have been Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Studying for a degree in Art History and Archaeology meant that she developed a thirst for anything old, beautiful and very often dead. She tries to combine this with contemporary settings in her writing to make unique and chilling modern stories. The friendship with Jess, the family closeness and the love interest scenes were a wonderful addition to the suspense we get, like breathing a bit of fresh air as well. I loved it when scenes made me giggle or give me the butterflies. It was very light as well, which helped break the scary moments and make you believe everything was good, before another plot twist happened. It’s the story of a small-town Irish girl, Niamh, who is on a summer programme in London. Unfortunately, instead of the glitz and glamour she dreamed of, she is stalked through the city by someone (or something) with nefarious intentions…

The main character, Niamh, is coming to London for a 6 week long drama course she dreamed of for a long time. It’s one of the most prestigious programs in Great Britain. Soon after she first gets to London strange things and murder start to happen though and somehow Niamh always founds herself always in the middle of it.If magic is thrown into a story, it has to either be a defining role or weaved well into the world-building so that there is a sense of believability of its place in the mystery. Otherwise, the resolution just feels lazy and unfinished. Though I think, after re-reading this review again, it turned into more of an analysis. Oops.

I loved Ruth and Derek. Ruth is the librarian at Niamh’s school and she is an absolute star. Sweet, kind, and makes sure that Niamh has someone to talk to. Someone to care for her while she is in a strange country with scary things happening around her. And Derek was just wonderful. I love the guy, he was always there for the kids in his building, and made sure to protect Niamh whenever he could. Made sure that the police couldn’t go too far. It was fantastic. General John Pershing, chief of the American Expeditionary Forces, officially recorded Gunther as the last American soldier to die in World War I, although the death toll would climb as it took several days for the news to reach remote battlefronts around the globe. Armistice Day casualties surpassed the daily average on the Western Front. Last One to Die is my love letter to all of the horror books and movies I inhaled as a teenager. There was something about the thrill of being scared, but also be in control of what was causing that fear, that I loved – and still do! So I set out to write something scary and, most importantly, fun. It’s a creepy little slice of escapism from the modern world. The storyline echoes that of the Fear Street and Point Horror novels that I grew up on. Simple, but effective storytelling.I’m not sure about the timing of the plot - I only realised at the end that Niamh had been in London for 6 weeks when I thought she had only been there for about 3! Last One to Die by Cynthia Murphy is the first book I read this year, and my first 5 star as well. I am now confident that 2021 won’t be that bad. I am happy that the author told us how Niamh was pronounced. I am sorry, but I just don’t know any Irish people. And I live in Dutch-speaking country. XD I was already prepared to google it and see what was up, but I am happy I didn’t have to do that. I wish I had done more research as I actually didn't realise this was a YA thriller and I am normally let down by those - they seem to be romance driven and just not very good, in my opinion. Now the plot. The start was alright, and it was intriguing enough to keep me reading. But towards the middle of the book, the story started to drag, and almost left the book as a DNF. I feel that the author really needed to add more layered or suspicious characters to her story, because the introduction and consequent arrest of Will was too strongly a red herring. Because of the intense suspicion thrown onto his character and the obvious dislike all the characters hold for him, I automatically dismissed him as the killer. And honestly, his sudden support and protectiveness for Niamh seemed to come out of nowhere. It was never explained why he felt it necessary to go to her apartment, or get so involved with chasing after Tommy. Him and Jess were never really shown as close in any way, so it also didn't make much sense for them all to be suddenly be working together. . According to author Joseph Persico, Gunther was one of at least 2,738 troops and 320 Americans to die on the Western Front in the war’s final day, most of them in the six hours between the armistice signing and enactment. Persico wrote in Eleventh Month, Eleventh Day, Eleventh Hour that the death toll surpassed the daily average on the Western Front. “It seems so foolish,” Corporal Harold Pierce wrote of his experience on the war’s final day, “to keep up the killing till the last minute.” I devoured both Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis and Good Girls Die First by Kathryn Foxfield. They both had that feeling reminiscent of a really good teen horror movie and I couldn’t put them down. I’m also excited for The Cousins by Karen McManus, as I have loved her previous books.
